August 29 is also the 4th anniversary of Hurricane Ida hitting my hometown of Jean Lafitte. Devastation beyond comprehension.

Houses on fire Water went over the levees protecting the town. Everything flooded. This is the marsh broken apart and blown onto land. Mud and marsh. Aerial view of my town flooded from hurricane Ida

That looks very devastating. How is the recovery?

It’s getting there. There’s still no high school and no town hall. There are still some folks living in trailers in front of their gutted homes as they wait for govt grants. Most of the live oaks further south are dead from saltwater intrusion. 85% of homes are raised now.

Four years later, they are still waiting on FEMA, and the administration is gutting that department. Hopefully, you and your family are high and dry.

🩵 My parents’ house had minimal damage because their house is up high. They got lucky. And yeah…I believe that the parish handles the funds now but it’s glacial

I still have students from down the bayou whose families have never recovered. Ida's aftermath is ongoing.

Wild how we’ve almost become desensitized to these massive storms. I grew up hearing about Camille from the 60s as The Storm. Then they started to come one after another.
