So our circa 1965 stove just announced its demise in a spectacular and scary fashion, with a loud BANG, sparks shooting in all directions and a flash of light visible under the two right burners. We've gone from two fully working burners to zero. How's your weekend going?

My 18 yr old treadmill decided to go kaput while I was on it the other day. A loud “pop” and the screen went blank and it stopped. Ugh.

I had a Frigidaire electric stove from 2005 and one day 2 yrs ago I turned it on and it did the same thing …looked like an explosion inside the oven and then it just shut off….I unplugged ASAP and wow…scary.

Well I have bought at least 3 stoves since then. They don’t make them like they used to. But then again electric stoves cost 500 now.

Oh well that's good news. $500 is not too much. I was afraid a replacement would be a lot more than that.

I have a front loader washer which flooded the laundry room a week ago Saturday. I will call a repair person next week. Fortunately the ten year warranty hasn’t expired yet, and it has never been repaired.

It's a short. An easy fix. Still, it might mean that other wiring could be nearing its end, and wiring an entire stove would be a chore. Replacing it seems prudent.

Khashoggi's Ghost @urocklive1.bsky.social

So a short is an easy fix? Hopefully my friend can fix it then. I've assumed we'd be needing to replace it soon anyway. IDK how long electric stoves usually last, but 60 years seems like a pretty good run.

Paul A. @paul.ofthenorth.ca

I can't for certain, and I'm not an expert, but that's what it sounds like to me. There's not much under the top than wiring and connectors/connecting blocks. Although, a foreign object is a possibility. Temporarily fixing it is OK, but if the wiring has gone bad it could be a fire hazard.

It was actually the only remaining original appliance from when my family bought the house new in the mid 1960s. The OG oven made it all the way until Thanksgiving day seven or eight years ago, which was fun and forced me to get creative on dinner. Everything else has been replaced at least once.

I’m so sorry, for loss AND unnerving announcement. We’re down to one burner; two vendors I’ve tried to replace ours have taken one look at kitchen design + basically fired us as buyer/client. Induction/regular plug-in burners can carry you affordably thru till you can deal w/ replacement.
