Cities hope to attract more police officers by cutting education requirements
Cities hope to attract more police officers by cutting education requirements
Dumbing down the police. Great.
They’re really serious about turning everything into a mediocrity.🤦🏾♀️
Why the fuck do we need more police when we have more per capita than any other nation and are at a 65 year low in crime?
High School drop outs welcome🤷♂️ "More than 80% - of law enforcement agencies only require a high school diploma to be hired, according to a 2017 survey of nearly 1,000 departments nationwide."
I'm sorry there were educational requirements? That's news to me
Great, what could go wrong.
I didn't know your police officers got much education _to start with_. We have 2 (+½) years college/university level education here...
Any criminal attorney, prosecution or defense, will tell you that without an educated police force, cases can’t be prosecutors. Inexperience and lack of education results in more injuries and cases that can’t be prosecuted. Great for public defenders to win, but justice isn’t served for anyone.
Dumber cops is what we need
bsky.app/profile/mans...
to what??? Not having to pass kindergarten?
Yeah I guess that’s one way. But what is the population of people out there who were only not police officers because of those requirements?
We already did that. Bad idea. Raise the starting pay instead.
like abolishing college requirements for ICE? bsky.app/profile/did:...
We are spiraling...
Nice Let’s add to the destruction by hiring thugs, felons, r**ists, and whatever else.
Just what the country needs --- even less-qualified law enforcement. 🙄
I'd offer a trade: we'll drop the college education requirements, but also end immunity from consequence. All employment records, reports/penalties/reprimands will be stored indefinitely in a publicly accessible database. If fines are accrued due to their improper actions: its taken from pension.
They'll always be volatile and racist, but we can at least rest easy knowing they're dumb, too.
Can’t see any downside from that idea. Nope. None at all.
Good idea let's give the uneducated a badge and a gun what possible could go wrong .
Ah yes because the less educated typically aren’t more biased or racist than their more informed or more educated counterparts 🙄
That's a TERRIBLE ideal! A goodly majority of police now are made up of those who were once school yard bullies who want to be able to "legally" assault people & get paid for it! Allowing those who can't pass today's standards for officers is just asking for even more police brutality & killings!
That’s the general idea, the cruelty is the point
You'll get no argument from me on that Trish.
Oh great they want a bunch of dummies to enforce the law! The jokes write themselves! 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, let's lower the education requirements for those empowered to shoot to kill.
Damn, I didn’t realize they even had an education requirement. Does this mean that you now don’t even need a high school diploma? This is the opposite of what needs to be happening. The should be required to have a bachelors. We are allowing uneducated people to use guns & police us.
Let’s lower the education requirements for lawyers, teachers, scientists, doctors, judges, nurses etc… A police officer has just as much ability, if not more, to inflict damage or death as any of these professionals, so why are they the exception in requiring college degrees?
I thought you didn’t need any education at all judging by the social interactions of many, many leo’s….
Fascists hope for more minority control by relying on intimidating violence bsky.app/profile/phil...

Fewer officers with less deadly equipment leads to better law enforcement.
Just when they should be more equipped to handle mental illness, drug abuse, homelessness, spousal abuse, missing persons, etc Now, they just need to be a Kyle Rittenhouse supervised by this guy
Race to the bottom
Maybe the solution isn’t fewer education requirements and more cops, but more education requirements and fewer cops.
Even dumber cops, definitely what we need.
wow, this definitely can't go wrong in terrible ways...
They literally pick the dumbest people they can get already.
Hey! This means I can be a cop! Yippee!!!
Great, soon they'll be recruiting these guys, you know, 8th grade gradgeeatz.
America's REAL DEFICIT 🎓
They'd attract more cops if they required more education and weeded out the lunatics
Oh good. 😒
I'm conflicted. I support removing education requirements for jobs but believe police should have some. Additionally, I think police training is inadequate.
I would add that college is expensive. We would have a more educated police force (and population in general) if college were free… if training for jobs were free…Having programs to meet are basic needs…
Great stupid , clueless “Bubba’s with disregard to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
...a decision that has no foreseeable consequences that will come back to bite us in the ass later.
What could go wrong here?
Although, advanced degrees can take many years — this can be tailored for cops during training. At minimum, a preliminary comprehension of these techniques — would assist in deescalation processes. Hopefully some procedures can be incorporated in future iterations regarding police shootings. -ONE.🇺🇸
... & police brutality... -ONE.🇺🇸
I'm of the belief that education canNOT hurt any Police Officer. Specifically, "CONFLICT RESOLUTION" & "SOCIOLOGY" incorporated in some studies can assist them on the beat. -ONE.📚 1. government.georgetown.edu/conflict-res... 2. www.usnews.com/education/be...
Police education requirements should be raised, not lowered. Look at nordic countries that require a bachelor's degree and over three years of studies and training to qualify as one. Really helps cut back on the gung-ho bullies.
That’s not gonna go well, whenever you lower standards that’s when bad things happen. Maybe raise the bonuses not lower the standards @phillewis.bsky.social
Well, that's going to end as expected.....🙄!
Corrupt politicians are just funneling money to execs and shareholders of the defense industry
I'm surprised they ever required any college credits at all. "The changes bring the cities back in alignment with much of the nation. More than 80% - of law enforcement agencies only require a high school diploma to be hired"
as more and more citizens (and others) tell the officers what the law is --- on the spot.
LMAO what education requirements? They can hardly cite the laws they are supposed to enforce.
yes because dumber cops is just what america needs now…
Absolutely ridiculous. Not us. We actually encourage further education through learning grants funded by the city and the police dept.
And yet they still commit heinous crimes against natives and other PoC.
Jfc
Smh. Less educated, more dangerous.
Oh, good, let's have new cops more idiotic than the current ones.
➡️ chng.it/hF7YK55Kqq
This type of thing is going to start happening in many fields of work. When you largely stop hiring black and brown people, and women because of “DEI”, the pool of available candidates, as well as the quality declines. Unqualified white men will be poisoning the labor pool everywhere.
“Murica
Let’s not go here. Your assumption that young white men are poison is disheartening and one reason young men are going toward Rogan types for affirmation. Lets say a young white man reads this and then goes on AI who tells him he is wonderful, will you have any influence over him?
I’m way less concerned about police recruits’ educational levels than whether they can pass the “I am not sociopath“ test. If we ever start using it…
I actually laughed out loud. What?
Because that's what we need in law enforcement. Cops with even fewer critical thinking skills.
Finally. I for one am tired of being talked down to by these high-minded philosopher kings with their maybe two years of junior college
The dumbest, least, lowest.
Great. Because what we really need is more uneducated fuckhead assholes with guns and the power to hurt people.
No
Oh so more morons with a gun, what could go wrong?
Yeah also that guy playing the cop in that show, Jay Johnston, was a January 6th insurrectionist who was of course pardoned by the orange shitstain
And soon to get a million $ settlement for being kicked off Bob’s Burgers. 😂
No. Not Dollar Village Bruce Campbell.
Fuck the police! Abolish the police!
Well, we have unqualified fuckwits running the federal government, so why not have unqualified fuckwits policing us, too?
Government by Education > Government by Force
What could go wrong?
Wow…these standards are already pretty low.
I swear you stole this from The Onion!
George Carlin did material about this in 1999. IIRC it's largely a rant about toxic masculinity from the perceived alpha males to police brutality. But as usual, the material has aged pretty well, aside from nobody is ever going to bomb an airplane in his TSA rant.
nothing says ‘to serve & protect’ like people who can’t spell or define the words “Cities hope to attract more police officers by cutting education requirements”
Oh and provide free education.
lol. Stupidity begets more stupidity. How about raising wages, providing cheaper homes, providing cheaper groceries, providing free health care. Hiring more doctors, nurses and psychiatrists? Do this and watch the crime rate go down. Suddenly you don’t need so many cops anymore. 🤷♂️ crazy right?
People are dumb enough.
There are requirements?
Maybe just provide more support for education?
It's not a good sign when ICE and cities have the same strategy to cut education reqs for police officers. Also goes against their own research findings - more education ➡️ less force, less complaints.
Pshaw. SCIENCE??? In AMERICA????
TIL: City police have actual education requirements
Just what we need - uneducated law enforcement.
Didn't think the education requirements were big enough to cut.
Nothing like an uneducated cop.
What could possibly go wrong?
Is the answer to the question, “how do we make an already bad situation worse?”.
As long as they're educated enough to read this. yzyprints.com/product/the-...
Fried HARD.
Why not? The minute a felon was allowed to just be on the ballot for POTUS and given free reign and a blank check....
We do not need more police officers.
🪡3 and you can use it as a way to root out any racist bastard that may be on the force, cause they certainly wont want ro patrol or get to know ppl of certain communities & it will show. That will be a clear cut sign they are suitable for the job
🪡2 Hard for cops to treat a person they know terribly, but very easy to treat a random person like they arent human when you dont know them personally
Actually I would argue that we need more officer patrolling on foot instead of wasting money giving them military weaponry & vehicles all the time. Not only are the vehicles expensive the annual maintenance costs are also. Just put more cops in cities to get to know the ppl of their communities
Cops don't make communities safer. We need people who aren't militaraistic gun worshipers responding to crises.
Cops dont make communities safer TODAY because they dont know the people in the communities they serve so they have no connection & dont care. Its simple as that. Literally
Policing as an institution in North America is the direct descendant of slave-catching "patrols" and anti-Indigenous colonial armies. Policing in the UK is a direct descendant of anti-poor laws, enforcement of land enclosures, and private armies. Police have never kept anyone (except rich ppl) safe.
So I'm guessing all the black cops that have been on the force and been continuing to be on the force for the last 50 years are all a part of that also correct? Do you even hear what you're saying? If what you're saying was true where we are at would have happened 50 fucking years ago
Lateralized and inter-community violence committed by other group members is a thing, esp in inequitable societies. Many Black folks (historical and contemporary) have discussed their particular experiences with Black officers. If you think I'm wrong, i suggest you look it up for yourself.
Im not saying it isnt, but the key point behind my statement is that the more integrated the offices are eoth the community aka the more they know the actual ppl of the community the less likely they are to demonize those ppl. Period. How easy is it for you to rocket off & lash out in anger at
Someone ok the internet who you dont personally know? But a friend who you have a disagreement atleast in the beginning takes a while to build up to that point. And the reverse side of the coin is the more the communities know the officers the less they are to demonize them automatically. Even here
Ur trying to discuss this with someone who is a felon, survived the sackler opiate epidemic & managed to pull myself from homelessness into a successful small business owner. Its about the ripple effects the actions cause. Instead of cops telling the honeless to clear.out & leaving them on their own
Nothing like lowering standards to improve something. Yep, that's definitely a well thought out strategic move. 🤦🏾♀️
That's a recipe for disaster. SMFH
I'd rather my police officers have education on the level of Batman, thank you very much. Taught by experts in their field in a multitude of disciplines. Failing that, a Bachelor's should be the MINIMUM requirement, bar none.
So basically, security guards with a license to kill.
They had education requirements?
If that is the case, then they certainly not have legal protections and immunities. Being easy to hire should make them more expendable.
In Germany it takes 3 years of education, training and working under direct supervision to become a police officer. And they don’t even carry guns!
bsky.app/profile/mary...
Cops with 4-year college degrees have significantly lower excessive-use-of-force incidents.
The only education requirement I've seen for cops is to have none.
They were already low enough Jesus christ
Just what the world needs, dumber cops. Like, if you think they can't tell the difference between the way people look now.....
Thought they already did that.
Look for corrections officers to become police officers. Dumb underachievers like having a gun, badge, and power of the law to get self esteem and stupid significant others. Slave enforcement chimps are the lowest of the low. Police officers used to be respected, now that are scum repressors.
That should help!
Love cops but wish they were even dumber? Have I got some good news for you!
Nothing can go bad from this…..
Like with ICE: get them when they’re young and dumb. Great plan…
Chicago has heightened education requirements for cops but yet there is some grandfathered in senior officers who don’t even know law very well Like 900 hours of training still isn’t enough
I mean, they already have a low ceiling on intelligence. Now they're capping reading levels?
"Can you name the former 3 branches of our government system?" "Uhhh.... no." "You're hired! Here's your badge and gun."
anyone who ever says "the solution to this problem is less education" should be immediately fed to the Sarlacc
You mean a high school diploma was already asking too much?
They upped to Bachelor's degree for most urban dep'ts about 20 to 25 years ago. After Len Davis in NOLA they did studies that showed lower requirements led to more corruption. What this means is more Len Davises and lots more Ramparts and Seven Fives.
No, Dallas is dropping the Bachelors degree requirement and just requirement a HS diploma, which is what most LE agencies do.
You cant fool us and pretend like cops in Texas all have Bachelors Degrees 😂😂😂😂 come on now.
I said Dallas, not all of Texas. This is mentioned in the article.
I feel like more cities should follow Dallas then not the other way around 😅 Also, you're right, my bad.
Perhaps they should in an ideal world, but the reality is that law enforcement is a far less attractive job than it was 10-15 years ago. Agencies have to adapt to keep enough people on patrol 24x7 to answer 911 calls.
Alright well maybe for dispatch you could lower expectations but even then, its a pretty stressful job. I agree tho, instead of leveling down they should prop UP the Police Officer jobs and make it more appealing, also get rid of the racism and mysoginy... they would get more recruits for sure.
The stories of hostility towards female officers and expectation that you need to be dirty to survive would eventually push anyone well-intended out of the field.
It takes more time to become a barber or a cosmetologist than a cop. www.cnn.com/2016/09/28/u...
And what additional training should they get? More range time? Mental health training? More EVOC training? Look up the cirrucula for these states, and you'll see that their courses already cover a lot. Moreover, like other professions, there is ongoing training. Perhaps too many hours are
required for being a barber, rather than too few to be a cop.
It's both.
Think about it this way - how long was basic training, and then how long was your MOS training? Do you feel each was long enough, too long, or too short?
Cops and service members are not equivalent. Cops are civilians, we weren't. We had a contract, cops don't. We had no union. We had the UCMJ for accountability, not the LEOBOR for protection. We took an oath. We faced prison for desertion. We had to follow orders even if it risked our lives.
But to answer your question, about 3 months and then 12 months, respectively. Basic was too short for everyone involved. My AIT was woefully insufficient to prepare me for my first assignment. Then again, it was 2009 and they apparently needed bodies more than competency.
I had a friend who was called up to Iraq from the reserves in early 2011. He said basic was so inadequate that survival/ injury was often based on the quality of your Sergeant (Iirc. I could be wrong about the rank). He was a medic.
Ah yes - But DEI was a problem.
don't need a diploma to swing a club
I always say, cops are just too intelligent.
How is that a serious question? Here's one: Do we need MORE police? Do they make you feel safer? Handing stupid people who want guns and power seems like a recipe for disaster, unless the idea of living in a police state charms you silly.
Ohhh that should work out well…
yea let’s give more dumb people guns
Of course they want the dumbest people possible to more easily train like dogs to beat up poor people. Fuck the police.
THERE WAS AN EDUCATION REQUIREMENT???!!!???
If they "only" have a high school diploma or a GED that's less of a concern to me than all of these existing cops who keep going to these Cop Warrior training seminars that promote brutality and misogyny
Exactly. There is no problem with only HS. It is a field that provides training and mentoring. The issue is the outlook of the trainers and mentors.
Checks out because OG slave catchers weren’t the crème de la crème.
CUTTING THE ALREADY MINIMAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS???????
Aren't they stupid enough as is? Most don't even know the laws.
What could go wrong?🙄
What in the actual…
USA Today using AI for pictures, what the fck
That is what we need. Cops that already get no training who are now more ignorant.
Even the Powerpuff Girls warned us about cops. youtu.be/j3PjoZ_pQ7I?...
That helps the police departments reputation
In today’s episode of “Breathtakingly Stupid Ideas”….
Start at desk jobs making minimum wage and increase pay based on educational level. Want to make 6 figures? Get your doctorate like some teachers do.
Fahkk
Just what we need ... more dumb phucks playing cop
Just what we need, even MORE cops that got Ds in highschool.
Time to change the old saying:- Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can't teach, become cops.
Ask people in Portland, Oregon, how that works out.
Is there any data that explains the justification for these staffing requirements? NY & Chicago have reported significant drop in certain crimes so why do they feel they need more Storm Troopers? How does lower crime mean more police?
Crime down? We're doing a good job! More of us would be even better! Crime up? We're overwhelmed. Need more police!
We're not even going to discuss the timecard fraud & overtime grift the police engage in to steal $$$$ from city & community coffers. Nevermind the funds utilized to cover their misbehavior and abuse.
This will be a disaster
This post just reminded me that in the early 2000's Maui PD started only requiring GED. Of the 100 that died in the Lahaina fire 75 were blocked in traffic by MPD.
periodic reminder that the Supreme Court specifically told a Massachusetts police force they're allowed to discriminate in hiring against applicants with average-to-high IQ scores
lowering standards to fill a quota? so much for merit based hiring.
If I wanted to fail upwards? I'd become a cop!
What could possibly go wrong?
"Fund the police" enthusiasts better wake the f*ck up!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFR_...
Their education requirements are already in the dump.
Yeah, but we’re going for the sewer
Isn't the education requirement a high-school diploma or GED already? They're already picking the dumbest humans, are they gonna start hiring kids in high-school 🤨
*not saying people who only have a high-school diploma are dumb- I'm saying people who become cops are dumb. Just to clarify.
That’s one of the problems now! So the solution is to dumb down the police force?
The police in certain areas are already plagued with poor officers. I can not imagine how this will help. Frankly, if cities take this sort of attitude then it might be better to just allow open carry and hope for the best results.
The last thing we need is less educated ppl with guns and a license to kill. We also need the ppl making the decision to have more education.
They’re recruiting for right wing death squads
The United States needs to completely gut and redefine “law enforcement.” The current carceral state cannot be separated from the white supremacy it upholds. In today’s system, we have a staggering oversupply of police. Lowering “standards” to hire even more is insanity.
great, more dullards with guns...
Police officers need more education, not less. That’s the problem.
can’t educated out white supremacy
I’m guessing they will end up with some A.I. robocop supervisor so it will be okay🙄
The a.i. supervisor:
No we need a world without police.
Just what nobody asked for: stupid cops
Honestly, we need to completely reevaluate how we handle higher education. Those who enter a service profession: cops, firemen, teachers, military, doctors, etc should have student loans forgiven after x years.
For those who can’t afford college, if they apply to a service program (ex: police training, pre-med) tuition should be deferred and then waived after they earn a degree and spend x years in the profession.
Re: doctors, nurses, etc. Tuition should be waived if they work in an area of market shortage. Boob doctors in Beverly Hills would not qualify.
Ideally tuition would be free for everyone, but everyone would also be taxed based on their true income level and tax dollars would support public universities. Schools would also take the best applicants. While there is some value to legacy students, unqualified legacies should not be admitted
What, they're hiring actual, factual troglodytes now? What a shithole country.
We don’t need more police.
None of them know anything about the US Constitution and the publics’ civil rights, what else are we willing to have them not know? How to safely handle a gun?
Why are there staffing shortages for good paying law enforcement jobs? The police unions control the hiring process and turn down most ppl, bc they want ppl who will shut up about the corruption. They recruit a lot of criminals to become cops. Don't believe what cops have to say about anything.
There is no problem with recruits having only a HS diploma. It is one of the few fields that provides on the job training and mentoring. Supervisors require degrees and many will go back for the degree if they want to advance. Competing with ICE will leave people not attracted to being thugs.
I would prefer police officers had a degree in criminal justice. I would prefer that police officers were vetted like military. They want people that can't critically think and will do whatever they are told even if it violates policy.
That would be preferable for sure, partly because the candidates age into more self-control and college increases critical thinking. I disagree that “they want people that cannot critically think” as the generality of the statement is a little insane.
Have you ever had to interact with the police in a small town in the Southeast? I have...
Thankfully no, but I have interacted with police that have poor training that makes them lazy. And part of that was that they were not all that bright. If you give people with these characteristics lots of power it is trouble. For most of those is is system and training.
There were education requirements before?
Who all thinks this is a really, really bad idea?
can't see how this could possibly lead to horrible unspeakable things or anything
