If you look at policy towards the homeless in some of the country’s most liberal bastions, it is impossible to not come away with the conclusion that a depressing percentage of hyper Democratic dc and the surrounding metro area would back Trump on his concentration camp ideas or whatever he’d do

Im in SF and have been feeling this way… it’s terrifying and so sad. I even talked with my therapist about it and she told me, well you can always think of them going somewhere good. Maybe they’re back with their families or getting treatment.

I don’t think it’s wrong to want not to see people laying in the street. I also don’t think it’s wrong to want to have the homeless be treated humanely, and have the our states have policies to care for them. There is a high percentage of mentally ill which requires one solution,

homeless children which requires another, drug users which requires another solution. So it’s complicated.

In Los Angeles, there has been plenty of publicity about the inhumane conditions in our jails, which are on target for record deaths this year. But nice liberal people are comfortable with the police rounding up unhoused and mentally ill people to have them rot in jail rather than build houses.

I’ve heard similar stuff from LA. People get illiberal real fast when an injecting addict is camping on the sidewalk verge outside their house. The “median” response doesn’t really work: it’s Universal Basic Income + real healthcare OR death-camps. Pick a side.

There is the larger politics that people believe and the smaller personal life that they live. If someone is walking down the street or riding a subway, they want to be left alone. That's just reality.

As someone who lives in a high homelessness area (sf bay area), been saying the same since concentration camps were first floated back in term 1 or 2020 campaign, whenever it was: don’t try to vilify this, because you’ll just raise the profile of the policy people will actually like

It's too difficult an issue for our simple minded solutions. Homelessness is sometimes the problem(poss. solution a house), and sometimes that symptom(solutions might involve drug rehabilitation, gambling rehabilitation, then add a home or a mobile home as may be desird)

the cheapest, most effective, most humane policy is to give people housing, no strings attached, period we've known this for decades anyone opposed to this has their head firmly up their own ass

Whenever the subject of the unhoused comes up and the complaints and criticisms about what a bunch of lazy drug addicts they are I routinely reply that the answer to these problems is more help (esp. housing and healthcare) which could be paid for with higher taxes on corporations and billionaires.

Not to say that I don’t take your overall point, I do, but DC residents’ sensibilities about Federal overreach at least attenuate the sentiment you describe.

I wouldn’t be so sure. We DC residents jealously guard the limited self-government we have and resent Federal overseers helicoptering (probably literally in this case) into a place that they really don’t know very well outside downtown and trying to use our city’s issues as a political prop.

Trump is building camps for homeless people first because he knows the public won't care as much, before he turns and uses the camps for other groups of people.
