Yeah, when I stare at name tags it's just because I'm anxious that I have incorrectly paired the tiny face from social media with the name in my head. (Though there are some cases where it's obvious the person you're talking to sees your name and checks out of conversation immediately.)
When I go to a con now I wear a sticker with my avatar, because that's much more recognizable than my face. And I don't change my avatar.
also, can we campaign to have tiny book covers printed on name tags at conventions, because THAT'S what I really have a great memory for.
But then we'd have to choose which of our books to highlight...
