Tangentially, I've found maybe one western tabletop game that properly grasps mecha fiction (though the designs there end up being really clunky too).

Ahhhh. A shame. There's always some measure of compromise, I find. Which one is this, out of curiosity?
Tabletop miniatures is such a hobbyist industry, especially once you step away from Games Workshop, that I suppose it's not surprising the design side can be lacking sometimes.
Weasel-Tech (terrible name lol). It doesn't attempt to engage with things like anti-war lineage - that might be out of the scope of a miniatures wargame, I'd have to think on that more. But it does get the feel of the action and has a campaign social system that does a decent job of developing
stories around the pilots in-between games. www.wargamevault.com/m/product/37... In RPGs there's a bit more choice. I like Case + Soul: royalrabbit.itch.io/case-and-soul
