Tangentially, I've found maybe one western tabletop game that properly grasps mecha fiction (though the designs there end up being really clunky too).

Tabletop miniatures is such a hobbyist industry, especially once you step away from Games Workshop, that I suppose it's not surprising the design side can be lacking sometimes.

Weasel-Tech (terrible name lol). It doesn't attempt to engage with things like anti-war lineage - that might be out of the scope of a miniatures wargame, I'd have to think on that more. But it does get the feel of the action and has a campaign social system that does a decent job of developing
