It goes from small to big! This is the correct way!
It goes from small to big! This is the correct way!
All my internal notes, file names, etc, run year/month/date and friends look at me like I'm a monster. It automatically orders them in your files! The one way that DOESN'T make sense is the American way.
Big to small (the internationally agreed "there are two competing systems, now there is a third standard") doesn't make as much sense as small to big, but at least it's an order.
Small to big has the advantage of giving you the one you're most likely to want to know first. "What's the date?" It's 2025 (I know that!) September the 3rd The other way round, unless you've been out of contact for a very long time, you can probably infer the rest once you've heard it's the 3rd
Some of my notes and writing archive go back years, and even a TV show spans two years, so it definitely depends on use case.
Yeah. I could cope with year first. It makes a lot of sense for putting things in order. Just when I want to know what date it is, it's a little annoying to have to wait until the end.
Big to small is really good for simple file sorts in computing tho, use it for filenames and you can find stuff even on crappy old machines
Oh, wait. You may have changed my mind on this. YYYY-MM-DD is really useful and clear cut.
always starting with the year also has the benefits of never mistakenly taking the dates from a previous year or misinterpreting "March Fourth" as "three quarters"
Hang on Cheryl, this is the internet, a conversation is not allowed to change your mind.
This is how I date all my invoices so they actually sort in the correct order.
This is ISO 8601 and is the only date format that is objectively better than the others.
Yeah, I can see that behind useful!
For work related items, YYYY-MM-DD is the only way.
Yep, realizing this was what finally convinced me we were doing it wrong.
If you ask me today's date, I am going to say, "It is September third." Not "'Tis the third of September, my dear lord."
"Remember remember the fifth of November for Gunpowder, treason and plot" I was born on the fifth of September, I might sometimes say September 5th but I'd never write it down that way except in reported dialogue But as with all things it's what you're used to and Celsius is obviously correct
Lol, fr, irl
We can’t help it that the new world lacks decorum
In most other European languages day-month-date is the most natural, though. …and now I wonder how Spanish speakers handle the American system. 🤔
Live your life however you want, my friend, but the rest of the world disagrees. It's like with the guns but a lot less consequential.
oh the canadian has an opinion 🙄
Oh, we Canadians have our own opinions, yes, indeed. Celsius or fight. Because Zero as the freezing point makes *sense*!
Of course, 0 Celsius is only the freezing point of certain kinds of water, in certain conditions. It's all a bit arbitrary at the end of the day, where you put the zero and where you put the hundred, outside of using Kelvin.
The reality with a lot of this stuff is, the one you're used to is the one that makes sense to you.
Wait, eagles per cheeseburger has entered the chat 😎
Letter? Legal?? Tabloid??? Inches?????
Damn straight I do, with my neighbour messing things up for the rest of us so badly.
Do you remember, The night of September 21st?
That is an excellent song--from the last century!
Released 18/11/78. Actually, although I grew up in Ireland I've lived in Canada for years so speak both. Like we measure distance in metric (or time for some reason) but size in imperial. Celsius is better though.
I can't get as excited enough to make the effort, but my dad used that in the US because this made so much more sense, and had to write "3 Sept 2025" on checks and to avoid confusion.
Am envious of Japanese big to small, which can be sorted.
He speaks the truth!
