The truth is that dealing with a pandemic sucks and a lot of people want to rewrite history such that people (like teachers) 50+ could have gone back to work comfortably before a vaccine existed.

In Iowa, the government emphasized keeping the schools open in 2020. My sister was teaching high school in a small town. Two of her colleagues died of COVID.

But the same Iowa government *refused federal funds* intended to improve ventilation. There was no effort to put air filters in classrooms. Their attitude was "it's just the flu".

I think Democratic-run states made tough choices they believed were in the best interests of the public. Unfortunately, Republicans gambled bit with reopening businesses and especially schools with limited negative fallout.

The fallout certainly wasn't what liberals assumed would happen. People were calling DeSantis a mass murderer. And his popularity *within his state* swelled while Kate Brown's plummeted in Oregon.

The "fallout" was that if Trump and the US had handled the Covid response as well as Australia did, our death count would've been around 150,000 instead of 1 MILLION. Even if we did half as well as they did, hundreds of thousands of people could still be alive. It wasn't that the fallout wasn't bad

For the first two years, COVID killed Americans at a rate 3X the rate of American combat deaths in WWII

It was conservatives normalizing, ignoring & claiming fake news on covid deaths. Hundreds of thousands more Americans died from covid than would have if it was handled right/ more strictly. We are the ONLY rich country in the top 20 for covid deaths per capita worldwide. We are the richest country

In the world. NO reason it couldn't have been handled better except for terrible decisions. I use Australia as the comparative example bc it has a similar individualistic social culture to the US. Look at the stats and find the US vs Aus. Stats show US did horribly www.statista.com/statistics/1...

Trump’s neglect of Covid was depraved heart murder, on the scale of a massacre, of the citizens whose welfare it is a president’s primary duty to protect. It is astonishing that he could dare to run for a second term, and even more so that he “won.”

If a president lost re-election because they botched the response to a terrorist attack but somehow won a second term later and then put an actual terrorist in charge of Homeland Security. That's RFK Jr as head of HHS

It’s simply impossible to believe. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but that second win strains credulity too far.
