Does it have an external line out? Is it one of those modern things with Bluetooth capability?

No it's dead old and only has two phono cables. Only way I can use it is by plugging those into a box I have that goes out to usb, digitise the record, then play it back. Plugging it into speaker amps it's too quiet to hear

Maybe a Bluetooth transmitter with phono inputs? Then use a Bluetooth speaker with decent max volume? amzn.eu/d/fV3hq55

You definitely need a preamp. I have and love a Bellari Rolls, but tons of other choices. https://www.rolls.com/product/VP549

You need a preamp, most old turntables need one, any old phono preamp will usually do! Your stereo amplifier is expecting a higher power signal than your turntable produces and the preamp does that bit.

Yes, I thought that would be the answer, so I bought one, but I went wrong somewhere because it has literally zero effect. I've only just noticed it says "magnetic cartridges" and as I don't know what that means I assume mine doesn't have one and that's probably the problem?

Does your amplifier have Aux in AND phono in? You'll probbaly want the preamp to go into one that's NOT labelled phono. And sorry if this is a noddy question but did that pre-amp come with a power cable and did you plug it in? I can see a similar looking one for sale WITHOUT power elsewhere.

Well, in this moment I can't remember, but if it had one I definitely would have plugged it in... I *think* it did

I've got it out now - two phonos in, two phonos out, power cable and an off-on switch, that's everything on it. You bet I plugged that cable in and switched that switch on. So it must be the magnetic cartridge thing, this must only work on fancy-pantsy turntables not inherited old record players

If I'm being honest I've hit the limit of my expertise, sorry, I guess there are more types of cartridge than I realised, I know my very old thorens turntable has a moving magnet one but that's not the one it originally came with having just googled it but maybe yours is moving coil.
