This is my neighborhood. There AREN’T sirens going off everywhere. They are not doing this for max theater. They are doing it _to get people._

I would call your mayor and ask why she’s permitting illegal checkpoints.
Seriously? I do not think you understand the situation in DC.
I realize they don’t care about legality at this point, but if you know—are they formally doing this as an interior immigration checkpoint, or something weirder?
Seconding this question: I’m not sure if reporting is clear on what they’re calling this.
For the 14th St checkpoint the other night, reporting had authorities saying: we’re checking for functioning taillights and seatbelt compliance and also: we’re checking for licenses and immigration status. I’m now very unclear on the legality of these checkpoints?
That feels very illegal to me! I haven't researched it recently, but that feels like a checkpoint for general law enforcement, which IIRC is a 4th Amendment problem. You can have an immigration checkpoint, and you can have a DWI checkpoint, but you can't have a checkpoint for all the things.
I used to write motions challenging the scope of DWI checkpoints when they expanded to check for things like insurance and registration.
is stopping to check insurance and registration a seizure in a way that a dwi checkpoint is not? is combination itself a problem? or does dwi have an exigency that justifies an otherwise unlawful seizure?
It's been years, and I can't look it up right now, but my memory is that DWI checkpoints specifically are ok b/c they are both justified by a serious public safety concern and tied to the roads (unlike, say, checkpoints to look for drugs). Paperwork doesn't have the same public safety justification
thanks!
Definitely do not bet on my being correct about it!
that's okay, I assure you that your uncompensated responses to my idle and I'm sure ignorant musings are being held to a very low bar
This explainer from 15 years ago is still pretty good on the law. Hasn't developed much recently. www.aclu-sdic.org/sites/defaul...
Whatever happened to the ACLU? Can't remember the last time I heard them suing the Trump admin
So, they're illegal? They're not being conducted within a reasonable distance of the border.
The ocean is the border
i was misremembering, your cite to ACLU / what CBP thinks the border is, are right on. that should be external, maritime borders, not including the Great Lakes or eg the Souris and Roseau Rivers, which I had not heard of before right now. Who names a river Mouse anyway. cc @asgvisalaw.bsky.social
Seems like it was a bad decision when we decided the 4th Amendment doesn't apply within 100 miles of the border (i.e., like 90% of the country by population and every single large city save Denver.)
People of color, specifically.
Apparent _immigrants,_ specifically. This has been immigration enforcement.
Dara, do you think they are stopping a car full of white men? No, they likely focus on the people of color, this is racial profiling being used to try to catch a gardener or nanny they can rip from their family.
Yes, “apparent” as in people who APPEAR TO BE, as in racial profiling, yes.
Appear to be immigrant? No, they just happen to not be white.
No, this is exactly the distinction I am drawing. Enforcement that was indiscriminately targeted at nonwhites in DC would look different — there would be operations east of the river, for example. The operations we’re seeing reveal racialized assumptions about who is an immigrant.
😡
Racial profiling and making DC UN-livible.
understandably, there is a steven miller quota to meet.
If you're an American and you're NOT deeply humiliated by this, you're not a REAL American. Fie on you and a pox on your house.
They're hunting us for sport.
To whoever saw this and decided that, yeah, the answer was to have more sirens down my street for the last three days: thanks for reading my Bluesky, please get out of my city
Will someone please tell me how this is 'making America great'?
It’s both. The theater is to keep his fucking rube fans happy.
This is so so sick.
Where are all these people sleeping, eating and who is paying for it?

Many of us (most of us) in the neighborhood don’t have cars
Seems like they're blocking traffic while armed. Is this a state where you can defend yourself and your property by using your vehicle as protection?
This isn’t a state. It’s the District of Columbia.
Govt must prove you could safely retreat AND were not in danger of loss of life if you choose to use deadly force in DC. mpdc.dc.gov/sites/defaul... Beep Beep, Vroom Vroom.
The only thing people can say is fuck this shit.
Set off sirens. Do not let them do this shit quietly. Drive through that checkpoint till they beg you to stop. This is YOUR neighborhood
