A Texas official said “there wasn’t a lot of time” to alert camps of the flood risk. But AccuWeather’s chief meteorologist said warnings gave “plenty of time to evacuate people to higher ground.” “The question is, Why did that not happen?” he said. By @jenniferberryhawes.bsky.social

I call bullshit. In Arizona we get emergency alerts on our phones for dust that MAY end up in strong rain warning us the dangers of flash flooding possibilities and what to do. I just got one about a week or so ago.

It's all about failures of disaster warning communications networks. Identifiable, named people are answerable, culbable, liable for those failures. Let's make them pay. And iteratively, deter future failures of communication. Anything else is wilfully creating a situation of moral hazard.

Probably because many were tourists and didn’t realize the amount of danger they were in. If you have never experienced a flash flood, you’re not likely to take a warning as seriously. We get these warnings all the time in the south & many ignore them unless you live in a flood zone.

My point is, these alerts are so common in this part of the county. Seems like every time it rains a flash flood watch/warning is issued, & rarely does it actually flood like that. People don’t usually seek higher ground because a lot of times nothing happens. We’re accustomed to ignoring them.

Does Kerr County, TX have a Sheriff and/or a fire department? When the NWS issued a flash flood warning, telling people to go to higher ground, why weren't any of their units dispatched to tell people? Those units all have sirens and loud speakers!

There are a LOT of helicopters with bright lights, sirens, and loud speakers in TX that could have flown the river warning people to get to higher ground. But then someone might have snuck across the border. The ability to warn and evacuate was there.
