Good question, I asked the same question. Apparently the birth certificate given to my parents when I was born is not the one required. Instead it's supposed to be a shorter form issued from the state capitol. Which I didn't know even existed until I went to renew my license.

For non Americans, a Real ID is a drivers license you get from your state after showing extra paperwork to meet federal standards. You need one to fly domestically or enter federal buildings. Some states have met the federal deadlines, some states have lagged behind.

Let's be clear here: it was NOT a "fake id". It was an ID that was not issued in compliance with the new "Real ID" standard. The wording here is weaselly. (Most current NJ drivers' licenses, for instance, aren't Real ID compliant, and getting one that is right now is difficult and expensive.)
