Ive had to boot a live USB and runn commands through chroot before to fix a driver/kernel incompatibility before, but also that was on a distro I don't recommend to anyone anymore (seriously regretting manjaro, my toughbook running Arch has been more reliable lol)
Yea you’ll probably need to do that on any arch based distros but for the average person running something like Ubuntu or fedora problems will be rare and typically easy to fix
yep, I have a non techie friend who uses Ubuntu and she actually managed to learn it pretty well, it was even my distro of choice back in college when I was still content with windows and just needed something lighter to make my laptop usable again since windows 10 was too heavy for it
Guys, it was something of an exaggeration, but precisely quoting a Linux fan on slashdot after a bad bug was revealed some time back: Well,*I'm* OK because all I had to do was recompile the kernel etc... I should have known better than dare say something potentially critical of Linux.
The problem is that a lot of people genuinely believe Linux is as difficult as you jokingly make it out to be. People unironically think you can’t use Linux if you aren’t an experienced programmer or something
I'm convinced millenials, much like boomers before them, are stuck with the impressions of linux they had when they were in their teens and 20s. I can get the insane CS degree experience if I want to, but I think most people just use something relatively user-friendly like debian or mint.
exactly, people entirely believe you still need to do stuff like that to use linux when in reality most people could just use ubuntu and the GUI package manager and get by fine (since most people don't need much more than office software and a web browser and such)
it still has its issues, they're just not as much as the "recompile the kernel" joke that people take seriously would have you believe
