This is why Im so annoyed by modern game minimum specs, these decade old games look THIS GOOD and run on practically a potato compared to current hardware, but modern games require so many more resources to barely look any better

also worth noting, if you're one of these people waiting, Bazzite is meant to replicate the general feel of SteamOS on desktop, and there's a few good user friendly distros like Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, and Endeavor. It does require a little more work up front, but once its going its smooth
The number of times Ive seen this popup in articles and threads really says a lot. Valve really needs to release a general installer of SteamOS 3 so people can get the sign they're waiting for to leave the mess that is windows (or at least dualboot and use it only in the rare cases its needed)

exactly, people entirely believe you still need to do stuff like that to use linux when in reality most people could just use ubuntu and the GUI package manager and get by fine (since most people don't need much more than office software and a web browser and such)

yep, I have a non techie friend who uses Ubuntu and she actually managed to learn it pretty well, it was even my distro of choice back in college when I was still content with windows and just needed something lighter to make my laptop usable again since windows 10 was too heavy for it
sadly creative software is its biggest weak point, no adobe products, even pirating them is incredibly difficult on linux, very weak graphics design alternatives, one really bad DAW, and only kdenlive and paid davinci resolve for video (free resolve lacks most common codecs on linux so its useless)
Id rather have to occasionally toy around with which version of proton to use than how to get around the next bloatware microsoft adds to windows, or window's increasing instability and likelihood to brick hardware (such as the recent SSD issue on win11), but I have to dualboot for my DAW sadly
unfortunately the sentiment of linux is still stuck in the mid 2010s or earlier, its still not perfect and has some annoyances even for someone like me, someone who has bothered to install arch on a toughbook, but its come far enough that Id say its a fair trade off compared to windows 11
Tbh, my entire reason for leaving windows was that it got in my way too much, though unfortunately its that or mac OS for most good creative software rn, and if you REALLY don't want to give up some games, kernel level anticheat doesn't work through wine/proton, so swapping isn't always a choice rn
Ive had to boot a live USB and runn commands through chroot before to fix a driver/kernel incompatibility before, but also that was on a distro I don't recommend to anyone anymore (seriously regretting manjaro, my toughbook running Arch has been more reliable lol)
assuming a good distro that is, can get stuck on Manjaro's buggy bullshit or be an unlucky person told to use Arch first for some reason. Its right on that 90% mark but that last 10% is a huge sticking point because people just want to use any program and install it in a few clicks.
tbh, it is ALMOST there, now just if installing stuff not on a repo built into the OS was GUI like opening an EXE is so terminal becomes like windows CMD, a useful tool but not a necessity. Besides that its mostly down to application compatibility because very few companies make linux software.

its at least better than it used to be, but even regardless of driver issues, devs are shifting towards kernel level anti cheat because we're supposed to just allow entertainment the deepest access into our entire lives for some reason? And kernel level anticheat generally isn't linux compatible

They're not perfect, there's how they've handled credits for the Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza/Like a Dragon) series and the many ports of such, but they set a much better standard than companies like Microsoft and Activision
