I’m fortunate enough to have friends and family who could (I fuckin hope) shelter me until such time as I could get back on my feet. Not everyone is!

A lot of the “people WANT to live on the street” talk comes from help that is offered to these people that comes with strings attached that would rob them of the dignity they have left
Every time one of these people talks about how they think homelessness works, it sounds *awesome*. Freedom from responsibility! Freedom from consequence! Freedom from the very rule of law! And you get *paid* for it! So... why aren't *they* doing it, then? Why are they such goddamn *chumps*?
He can't even park in the same spot for a week without a ticket, but a homeless person can be homeless FOR AS LONG AS THEY WANT ?!?!?!
That is very well said.
I was a busker for a few years many years ago. I only ever met one homeless person who genuinely wanted to be homeless and that was because he was quite seriously mentally ill and he just saw everything as a potential prison. And I met so many homeless people doing that job.
(Shoutout to the homeless folk who protected me from a load of drunk men one notable late night shopping season. Absolute legends every one of them)
I have talked to at least two women on the street who had to choose between keeping their dog or going to a shelter for the night. Not even a shelter where they were guaranteed a second night, just one night. That is a horrible choice to have to make.
Only slightly related, I was at a Weird Al concert last weekend and they showed a scene from the "biopic" movie during a costume change. You are, far and away, the superior Gallagher when compared to the real one.
In San Jose our stupid mayor's plan was to make a bunch of tiny homes and arrest people who didn't live in them. He effectively wanted to make a ghetto with no city services and kick anyone who drank a beer or smoked a joint out at the first infraction.
The good news is the plan fell through. The bad news is he's still arresting unhoused people anyway because he sucks. But assume the plan had happened, who would have any faith in that actually working? Give people REAL housing-first options, geez!
I'm sure you'll get reasonable responses to this wonderful and well-researched post.
Mr. F. Tompkins gets it.
Yes indeed. I think you're being generous to say "a lot".
Hell yeah, go off, king
You can have an apartment, but can’t share it with your unmarried partner! Or your dog! A strict 6 PM curfew, so you can’t work a night shift! You can have a space, but only one bag of items, not two! The federal government will pay you in full to lease hotels, but you, uh, just don’t do it!
everyone should just get to live in their own house and they own it and no restrictions medicine, food, and every other thing should be like that too tho, now i mention it
100% agree. The basic necessities of living should not be tied exclusively to your professional position nor be in jeopardy if that position falls into jeopardy. The rest of the world has figured this out already, but we let the rich tell us what to think.
