They haven’t gotten better. Although, they’ve started making black ones that look very Batman-esque. I much prefer them to the clear ones.

Here's an idea—so the masks are there to prevent reinjury right? Why don't they just all wear masks like that all the time to prevent the initial injuries?

No they’re for broken noses, ocular bones, cheekbones, etc. They’re not preventative in any way, plus they make it more difficult to play. Sweat gets in the mask, your peripheral vision is limited and it’s horrifying for everyone to behold.
