Not seen the film but Elon, much as he's a scumbag, hired other people to engineer his successful shit. Rush didn't. And Elon's bad ideas only manifested when he got directly involved (Cybertruck, Starship, etc).

If you watch the doc, Rush cycled through many engineers. The LAB at UW in Seattle even gave up testing. Told him carbon fiber would never work. Rush was a wanna be engineer, thought he was the smartest guy in the room, and he killed people.

Also Full Self Driving. in 2014, they had an Autopilot system that used sensors, cameras, maps, and human-written code, and worked darn well. He INSISTED on changing it to be vision-only, no sensors, no code (end to end trained ai). 10 years later it’s still worse at driving than their old system.

He did hire Boeing and the UW APL, then he got cheap and handed the project to one extremely anxious engineer and some kids from fucking Everett Community College!

So, according to the doc, he adored Musk and Bezos, calling them something like Dick Swingers. I think the difference of him going down was his ego on top of the fact that he was involved in making the stupid thing the entire time. Musk usually comes in later or sells the company earlier.
