Eh, my first thought was either an accellerationist or otherwise someone that he'd pissed off on his side. FWIW never followed closely enough to know that they hated him, thankfully.

Thinking about the 1969 Piazza Fontana bombing and how Italy's security services blamed it on anarchists, arrested nearly 100 activists and threw one of them out the 4th floor window of the police station. The bombing was carried out by a neo-fascist group with ties to the state security services.

Joking about someone being threatened with sexual assault. That's a fantastic look, mate.

Some decent policies, some absolutely disasterous ones, and an all-round sleazy fuck. However the whole Ken Starr thing was rampant hypocrisy from the Repubs so yeah. No-one looked good there.

There are some people who have an amazing ability to just not age. I swear that I know some folks who look just about identical to when I first met them 25+ years back. Others I barely recognise. Funny old world. (I'm relatively lucky myself. On the outside. On the inside tho... :/ )

Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
There's no way for them to stop it from making shit up. It's what LLMs do! They model language not evaluate sources for truth.

Yeah, got classed as terrorists after putting red paint on a RAF jet. 1) Such a security failure by the RAF. 2) That was not terrorism by any sensible definition of the word. Criminal? Yes. Not the same.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Interestingly, the flag shaggers who are painting roundabouts fit the "forcing change of behaviour through threat or use of violence" definition of terrorism far better than Palestine Action ever have.

I was last there well before GPS and found that my usual UK method of "get somewhere close then look out for signs" failed miserably! Same for my attempts once getting out of town in Sydney, Aus.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
TBH I didn't get that about US interstates round LA - signage seemed to only be for immediate local destinations so you really needed to know where you were going. Re: UK distances. I don't know, I just feel that our roads, incl motorways , aren't designed for long-distance travel.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Well aware of that show even if I didn't really follow it!
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
That's the fun thing about the UK. The amount of effort it takes to drive long distances is just, well, annoyingly high. Our road system isn't exactly user-friendly! Mainland Europe, Aus, US all easier to do distance (from my limited experience).
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, they would have arrived well into rationing so I have no doubt that the local food was not great then. And rationing lasted into the 50s so food was a problem for most Brits for well over a decade. Admittedly there's a long-held temptation to boil everything but at least that's on the wane!

Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, when you load a card into a phone's wallet you basically get a 'virtual' card with a completely different number linked back to the original account. Very sensible approach but obvs TfL won't know that they're on the same account.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
True, but if you phone them up they'll sort it out. TfL are used to people making mistakes like this!
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
What I think wound people up about the latest incident was that they were factually wrong. As a Brit I'll agree that *some* of our food has been terrible, although *all* being awful is a push now! (My mum grew up with WW2 & post-war shortages. Food in that period suuuucked.)
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
No, cooking chicken like that is Indian I think.

Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Right, OK, sort of see what you mean now. I'd be interested to see how to approach putting "product that tells minors to kill themselves" through the system...
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Eh, it may be an issue where his product has been touted in public as having certain capabilities (eg digital companion) but was then found to be telling minors how to kill themselves. OpenAI maybe shouldn't make a product that does that. (FWIW I do think this is a product safety issue, YMMV)
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
I kinda don't think it's a 1A decision even then, as you are giving protection to a non-sentient gibbering magic 8-ball. Can a non-sentient gibbering 8-ball actually have *speech*? Agree that precedence could be dangerous/restrictive. Could also be dangerous other way re: AI liabilities.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
I 100% agree. They are literally bullshit machines with no method of being able to discern truth from falsity. Where I have the issue is: Just because the output is words, not something else, why can it be given protection (1A)? It's NOT sentient, as you say (as do copyright decisions). Ugh.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Regular programmers can walk through their code and map the logic out. Old school chatbots, etc. You can't do that with LLMs. The huge amount of processes interacting with training data & inputs kinda nopes that. You can't point to some code and say "x programmer caused y." *bangs head*
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Actions tied to the output of an algorithm which processes inputs, then. Which is literally a decision. We have decision trees and stuff. Or choice, maybe. AI is an interesting case, though, as it is impossible to predict what it's "choice" will be, unlike a normal algorithm. ->
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
OK, cool, got it thanks.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
As a nerd I see absolutely no difference ***in theory***. "Decisions" are being made by probabalistically-driven machines. Aware that direct & indirect action are different. And that I may be a bit polarised in my opinion!
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Because intent? I'm trying to work out where intent, speech, and automated bullshit sits. Does - or even should - 1A even cover a probabalistic bullshit generator? This all makes my head hurt.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Correction: And just for fun, is grooming a minor a 1A issue as GPT victim was one? I have no idea what will pan out.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
And just for fun, is grooming a minor a 1A issue as GPT was one? Or is GPT not fit for *whatever* purpose so can be sued civilly? IANAL, just a computer nerd, but this is all a headache. Also AGI is a dead-end. LLMs are highly unlikely to be the correct path so digital sentience is irrelevant.
Chris The Hairy (@hairychris.bsky.social) reply parent
Well yes, which is why I said Canada. If you want other AI issues, Tesla are fighting in *US* court against their AI driving killing people. I know that these are not 1A, but more about how AI is treated legally. If Tesla are liable, will not OpenAI be liable for their AI? ->
