My first thought on seeing the word 'gibbous' is moon phase. My second thought is why is gibbous pronounced with a hard 'g' but gibbet with a soft 'g'? Same pronunciation rules should apply.

Oh definitely! I have a Norwegian friend and her grammar, punctuation and spelling is better than mine. Of course she was taught 'by the book' and doesn't slip into my lazy/shoddy ways. 😬
