Fuck! That's horrible.
Why isn’t New Mexico renamed New America. Something isn’t right.🤪🤪
The short version: New Mexico announced that they'll be backfilling 100% of the lost *federal* ACA subsidies with *state* subsidies...but only for enrollees who earn up to 400% FPL. This is still a HUGE deal because 85% of NM #ACA enrollees earn less than 400% FPL.
On the left are what the 2026 #ACA net rate hikes would look like in New Mexico if the state wasn't backfilling the lost subsidies. On the right is what it'll look like *with* NM coming to the rescue for most enrollees. ~15% of enrollees are still screwed, but 85% can breath a sigh of relief.
So far 2 other states have announced plans to mitigate at least some of the lost federal subsidies: CALIFORNIA is retooling their existing state subsidy program to fill in around 9% of the missing federal funding: acasignups.net/25/08/28/cal...
NEW JERSEY should be able to fill in around 40% of their missing federal funds: acasignups.net/25/08/29/new...
There's several other states w/supplemental ACA subsidy programs which may be able to mitigate a fraction of the lost federal funding, including Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont & Washington. Minnesota, New York & Oregon have BHP programs; the impact on those is unclear.
This is pretty amazing. I’m on turquoise care myself, so, for me, this alleviates some worry.
Yeah, I’m pretty astonished. CA & NJ are both backfilling a portion of the lost federal subsidies as well, but only a fraction and both of them are doing so *in place of* their supplemental programs. NM is apparently filling in 109% of it PLUS their supplemental subsidies, which is amazing.
I’ve been impressed with NM’s forward thinking lately, protecting healthcare for all. The new Covid vaccine health order is also very smart and comforting! sourcenm.com/briefs/nm-he...
Every state should do this.
Thanks for the info, Charles
I wonder what we'll be seeing in Oregon. I kinda doubt we have the money in the state budget to do what NM is doing.
Well, NM had already set up funding for a state subsidy program several years ago so it's definitely easier for them. Oregon just launched a Basic Health Plan (BHP) program for enrollees who earn 138 - 200% FPL, but otherwise I don't know how much they can do. acasignups.net/ira-subsidy-...
Here's some examples of what I expect Salem, Oregon to look like assuming the benchmark Silver rate hike is the statewide average.
New Mexico shines in supporting health care and Covid vaccines for its residents. Blue states will lead to protect.
New Mexico is one of the poorest states in the US (not addressing causal factors here). As a Californian, I resent our federal tax dollars going to vampire states. I do not include New Mexico or Hawaii in that category and am happy to support them in any way possible.
