Davey says Brexit is to blame for the arrival of small boats, which is in some ways true, although it does pretend that everything was fine within the EU, which very obviously is not the case, since Farage used the lie that we could get rid of refugees to push Brexit too #r4today

One of the reasons why things weren’t as fine as they could have been was that we rarely used the tools that were available to us. The Home Office could have made more use of the Dublin Agreements, the NHS could have charged back medical costs incurred by EU nationals but almost never did, etc.

And the reason for this was that the bureaucracy involved with either of these was more costly than just dealing with the thing ourselves. The systems functioned very poorly.

Is that our bureaucracy or the EU regulations themselves? I remember when Theresa May began enforcing medical costs on migrants not entitled to free medical care, it became very obvious that we previously had no system in place at all, so there was no way recoverable EU costs were being recovered.

Obviously, there's a question about whether we want to be a society that gate-keeps medical care in such a way at all, but we're now in a position where we have medical gatekeeping that affects genuine migrants and British citizens with difficult surnames and no returns agreement with all of the EU.

It’s why asylum seekers come by small boat not on lorries, but not why people seek a safe haven here. The numbers have increased all over North Western Europe so it’s not just a U.K. thing.

Finally someone has said it. Brexit. Farage wanted it, it has driven the crisis, now he wants to take the UK down a path Moseley would approve.

I do not want to be the Britain of Moseley. Powell. Yaxley-Lennon. Lee Anderson. We are the people who saw off slavery, communism and fascism, create the best music and film, stuff down kebabs and baltis. Minis. Mo Farah. Maro Itoje. Remember who we are at our best. Open. Diverse. Compassionate.

As ever the line of questioning on #r4today is utterly deranged, though. “Aren’t you just trying to seek attention that we usually give to Farage”🤦‍♀️ Let’s see them ask Farage why he thinks he should be entitled to any media attention next time he farts & it’s headline news??

Considering Farage has actively campaigned to defund the BBC, they need to review their policies on platforming him.

That's the bit I don't understand. Every media outlet was pushing Farage's 600,000 deportations and acting like he has the power and authority to enact any of it when he doesn't. He's not Prime Minister, Reform aren't the official opposition, so why did anyone give his rant the time of day?

At this point, it's bizarre that people consider #r4today a worthwhile source of news. It isn't.

Unfortunately Reform is leading in the polls. It would be strange if they didn’t attract attention. It is of course a question of cause and effect. Why are we having these polls 4 years out from an election?

I can’t listen to radio 4 Today programme anymore. I found the interviewing unbearable, the content often biased, and some of the presenting arrogant and sneering.

I think you’re conflating ALL immigration / foreigners. Farage said the Brexiting would enable U.K. to decide whom to let it - points system et al. Hint was always that non-Whites would be kept out too. Obvs wrong in all counts, but the electorate believed it
