NY has had a bill to do just that in the Assembly for years without a vote, it's called the NY Health Act. If Democrats wanted to make it happen, they'd have done it already.

The issue would be mass migration and a soar in real estate prices. This has to be a federal level effort and yes red states' opposition to progress and to the common good needs to be shut down.

A large portion of the outflow of federal funds to red states has to do with the existence of large military bases. The notion that we're just going to turn that off and everything will be ok, is fantasy. At -best- you get a military coup that tries to restore order.

Do you have a source that that is the primary driver for red states and their federal funds deficit? As far as I know, there are lots of military bases in blue states as well.

I stand corrected on that that math, the bases I'm most familiar with are in Texas and Florida, but the largest standing force is in California and the balance is more evenly distributed than I would have guessed. I don't think this changes my underlying calculus. Soft secession ends badly.

These things are fun thought exercises but it's a fact that the billionaire class and their Republican stooges created this nightmare, and only a mass popular movement that puts the fear of god in them will end it (though a massive cerebrovascular accident or cardiac event might help).

A few years ago, and prior to Trump 2, California passed a new law (EVs i think). Because many states adopted California's regulation, those states also, automatically, adopted the regulation. The concept of extra federal powers is interesting. No reason states cant form conventions.
