At the time I took the phrase "my chances aren't good" as him saying his chances of getting into heaven weren't good. Same with "b/c I'm low on the totem pole". Now I wonder if he meant b/c he's ill; like his chances of living long aren't good & he's low on the totem pole b/c his health is bad.
