A friend told me once that the long fading end of songs were important because DJs had to cue the next record. On a record player.

I was a DJ in the 80s. Your friend was not. DJs learned the tunes and prided themselves for being the fade out, as opposed to needing a fade out. Great DJs kept the music going with beat matching... only "fading out" when it was time to sell more drinks.
