Random thought that’s always bothered me. Why did the Super Nintendo and Sega versions of Mortal Kombat 2 use different fonts for FIGHT? And it’s really just the G and the T. And Sega has a second exclamation point, which I can only assume is for extra fightness

Were the ports done by two different development teams?

Yep. Sculptured Software did the terrible port of 1 on SNES, the excellent port of 2 on SNES and the equally phenomenal ports of 3 on both SNES and Genesis. Probe did 1 and 2 on Genesis and nothing after. Sculptured really excelled at audio in their ports, which is why 3 sounds so good on Genesis.

I remember having a buddy who was so annoyed by the names outside the health bars that he refused to buy the SNES version.

I got you. The answer is because MK II was ported by two different teams and typically in those days to get any game ported from arcades to consoles the assets had to be remade/reworked given the original assets could not fit onto a cartridge. They likely both made their own fonts.

Actually looking at it Probe just straight up copied the fight!! 1 to 1 with the arcade version just lower resolution so it was just Sculptured Software that made theirs unique. Still the answer is because both had to remake that asset just one decided to alter it 🤷‍♀️

Huh. The F is the tiniest bit different too. How very curious! I can't imagine it's a different font or something, and as far as I'm aware the Genesis should be able to render it just as well as the SNES if it's just a graphic.

Sega seems to be using the graphic from the arcade. The SNES one is probably an entirely new render altogether

Ahhh yeah they did say the Genesis one was closer to arcade didn't they? I wonder if the diagonal on the G looked wrong on the SNES or something and they felt the need to redraw it!

Readability? They have different character name placement, below the health bar vs in the health bar.

Different developers handled the ports. Probe did the Genesis version and Acclaim did the SNES. Game studios weren't super collaborative back then so I doubt they had much communication across the ports. Prolly got the assets from Midway and made concessions to the platform they were working on.

I made a meme video of Kenny Omega vs Sonny Kiss with Mortal Kombat, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to use which of the fonts for it. 😂

The SNES port was altered to include less blood and gore. I think they made some other slight changes like this as well to differentiate it.

That was the first one. MK2 on SNES left everything intact content-wise. It was actually a shockingly great port. Really only the PC and 32X ports could compare. Most thought it was better than the Saturn and PlayStation ports and those were way more powerful.
