Technically if someone at Columbia allowed someone else to use their account, so they could claim they had nothing to do with it, that would still be hacking.

Fwiw I think 'hack' includes material accessed outside allowed reasons. So someone with real credentials taking info for a non-work approved purpose is still a hack, legally.
