Whilst I understand why you'd think that I'm not sure I agree. I think it's more trying to use a candidate that will appeal to more people politically centered, Sanders, especially in the US is seen as very left wing, which does put people off voting. I don't agree with them, but understand.

And as sad as this is to admit, voters are often sold by who shouts the loudest, rather than who has the facts, hence Trump's popularity. Something democracy doesn't account for is someone's ability to lie.

Unfortunately center right and right wing votes are usually easier to get given the right leaning nature of the country (not just a US problem). Going from right to very left is more difficult to argue than going slightly further right.
