If it's like my dorms, it's designed to throw the mattress down there for....night time activities as otherwise the loft will bang against the wall. Or at least that's what it's used for.

lol. It is meant for you to store junk you don’t need to access every day. We lofted ours higher so we could have a couch/TV

But it doesn’t make much sense for a person who is just staying for a few days. You can see the height is adjustable although it might take two people to bring it down a few notches

Probably just the default. If they have summer athletic camps it's fine for athletes.

Yeah, that's what ours was for as well. We did the same, I just still remember that little talk our RA gave us all on the day we moved in.
