This time of year in Phoenix my husband, who's doing a masters program, bikes to the rec center and showers there. The shower is a necessity.

For some people it is. It isn't necessary for everyone. Biking at a steady pace with similar exertion to walking. Does of course mean flat terrain or an e-bicycle. 8-12 mph on a bike is similar to walking pace for a lot of people. That said, I used to bike 17 miles to work and shower/change.
