Look, regardless of peoples' feelings on her... When *else* would Sylvanas return to the story, if not a Quel'thalas expansion dealing with a threat to the Sunwell and the ongoing turmoils of Alleria? It's kind of a no-brainer lol

My personal guess is bare minimum an appearance in Windrunner Spire (Likely the last undead holdout, so room for her to ACTUALLY show up beyond an echo), and then maybe a big role in 12.2. Still convinced 12.1 is an Azuremyst/Draenei pivot.

It makes me even more confused on why there's literally no hints that Vereesa will be apart of the expansion now. Windrunner Spire is a dungeon, they were real fast at saying Sylvanas will be connected somehow, & we know it's about Quel'Thalas. 1/2

Love her or hate her, Sylvanas is one of WoW's most popular and iconic characters, only really surpassed by Illidan in the currently alive cast of WoW. It was a matter of when she would return, not if. I'd much rather she return in a story that makes sense, and not just because.

I think a problem with her coming back is that many of those players want *the* Sylvanas back, not the bastardized version of her that BfA/SL gave us, and her coming back is just a reminder of that "Hey here's the character you liked before we sanded off the parts that made her a unique character!"

If she returned as who she was originally, I'd welcome her back with open arms but the problem is the Sylvanas that can return, isn't the version that made us love her. I'd rather the version of her that they turned her into remain in the Maw indefinitely.

This is exactly why I have mixed feelings. I was telling my friend while doing heroics earlier, I want the Sylvanas that made me want to become a diehard Forsaken back, not the BFA/SL abomination that is. And I know that won't be, the damage is done.

I think it does make sense to bring her back for midnight… if they -have to- bring her back at all. The popular character that everyone nostalgias over doesn’t exist anymore. She was absoloutely butchered by the writing, in a way that I’m not sure people can accept a new arc from yet

Nothing is saying that she will be TRULY back. The way Maria Hamilton expresses herself may suggest otherwise. I think it could be memories, events related to the past. We will be visiting the Windrunner Spire & there will be lots of lore there. In addition, more stories will be added to Lorewalker.

Agreed Port, and I've said this before but from a writing perspective, it's important for WoW to grasp these plot moments because it makes for sensible and engaging writing, and it's often suffered by *not* utilising its characters connections to other characters/places/roles in the past.

Sylvanas being present one way or another (whether permanent, transient or in some other capacity) makes sense - this was her home, protection of it was her charge, Alleria is her sister (and hopefully Sir-Maybe-Appearing-In-This-Expansion, Vereesa).

My guess her return will just be temporary, like Ysera in DF. For several years, the Maw had been taking the souls of every lifeform in the universe. Even a single day would be a tall order for Sylvanas to reclaim them all, so I think she is condemned still, but may help us briefly.

In context, I felt that 'here' referred to the game timeline in general, rather than specifically Midnight. I know the interviewer specifically asked about the next expansion but I felt Maria was trying to avoid being that direct. But I could have misread it.

While I expected Sylvanas's commitment to the Maw to last longer than a handful of years (or however much time has passed), a good reason for her to return early would be if the Void was attacking and destroying the Shadowlands as well (which they did in ancient history).
