My mother was an RN. In the late 1940s, early 1950s, she cared for polio victims in iron lungs. She viewed the polio vaccine as a gift from God.

Mom worried success of US public health might be its undoing. As the pre-vaccine generations passed, would memories of the suffering, disability, and deaths caused by infectious diseases be lost. Time has proved her right. Too many Americans don’t understand infectious diseases are still here.
