agree with Ken that the timing of this is bonkers. I also think firing Rizzo feels completely knee-jerk, and maybe scapegoating for ownership declining to spend.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rizzo was asked to fire Martinez and refused to unless they fired both of them. Just seems like something he would do based on his intuition that he would be fired at season’s end anyway plus his over-the-top public defense of Martinez recently. I could see it.
How would you assess Rizzo's drafting and player development track record in the last ~decade? That seems like the primary impetus for firing him.

Are the O’s and Nats the same team? My column:
(I’m an O’s fan please don’t kill me)
It is absolutely scapegoating. That said no one here is under a delusion that "we are ready to compete for a playoff" came from Rizzo. Just a thing that has to happen on a long train of change
They had a mid-July date to decide if they were picking up the 2026 options for the pair. They chose not to, and had them leave to avoid lame duck managing with a draft/trade deadline coming up.
just watched the series w/ Boston & some of the Nationals players lacked hustle. LF especially a couple times was lazy going after a fly ball of which one should have been caught. The team also missed out on opportunities to have a runner go from first to third on a base hit. Lazy team.
