Is that it’s not true now or was it never true? I remember a lot of talk about their money in the 80s, but it could have been just as untrue then.

There was a major shift in the NRA's culture at some point in the 90s. My husband was "gifted" a lifetime NRA membership at birth by his grandfather. He says that NRA newsletters used to be 90% about safety, 10% about legislation, and now that has flipped. Not sure if $ vs endorsements changed then.

Yep. It had happened by the 80s. My step-father (grew up with a kid’s 22) often lamented this.
