I need to play Dread again (I never beat the last boss, he's a fuckin doozy) but I recall there being some really heartfelt stuff about her connection with the Chozo towards the end, as well as her revealing she can of course still speak Chozo fluently.

Yeah as far as "fanon that simply refuses to die," Samus being trans might be one of the biggest examples of it. It's sticking so hard I think one day Nintendo could make it canon. Vivian in the recent Thousand Year Door remake's localization gives me hope. bsky.app/profile/vrid...
That's the other weird thing too, between Birdo & Vivian, Nintendo of Japan is fairly chill with having trans characters. It's really just Nintendo of America that's tried to snuff that out, assuming that transness isn't appropriate for US kids. Samus would be a big shift tho, since she's the star.
Well, like you said, the fact that Vivian's story was left intact in the remake's English translation is at least a step in the right direction.
As I recall, that was the result of a trans woman who was on the team tasked with translating it (or maybe it was someone on the team had a trans friend?), and there was a decision made to not make the same mistake twice, tho I think there were fears that the higher ups would stop them.
This is the first I'm hearing about this.
I could be wrong, but I'm like 90% sure someone involved with the translation for the remaster at the very least said in an interview effectively "We know the history of this, we didn't want to erase it like the last team that was tasked to do this 20 years ago"

Clearly I need to play Dread again! Which I'm not complaining about, it's one of my favorite games in the Mettroidvania genre, and I'm pretty sure my favorite Metroid as well
