Taking psychic damage as I realize answers are to the unwritten "is it okay to disconnect from your racist uncle", and not "is it okay to disown your gay kid", which surely would get more support from the right. But even neutral questions can only get read defensively, "no THEY need to listen to ME"
and like yes obvs there are differences between team red and team blue before someone jumps down my throat. we've totally ceded the idea of any other politics though, and the reason we're in this mess is that the fascists realized it first and worked the system

real big difference if you rephrased it as "would you cut off contact with a violent family member" but no one wants to admit that bigotry and hate are violence.
