continuing my irregular practice of sharing under-$20 wines that exceed expectations: the gaudy “98 points” sticker on this chianti classico was a red flag but i tried it anyway bc it’s family-owned and the store had weak selection. turns out it’s very good! might become my new “house” italian red.

Did good with the OVR. Wife likes it. Me? Became a full time 'designated driver' many decades ago.

Reminds me of my misspent youth when I purchased a case of Pinotage from a startup winery for $6. (This was 50+ years ago.) A decade later I saw the same Pinotage on a restaurant wine list and it had won 5 gold medals during that period and was priced accordingly. We had 2 bottles with our meal.

i find budget chianti imports to be a pretty dispiriting category overall but this one is richer and riper than most without sacrificing backbone. still acidic enough to match tomato sauce, but unlike a lot of cheap chianti it’s also complex and satisfying on its own.

honestly i don't know the wine. but i *highly* recommend the area. close to siena, amazing wines & restaurants, local pici, even the roadstops are extraordinary.
