I'm not a fan of gift cards because as a gift, to me, they say "I felt obligated to get you something but didn't trust you enough to just give you cash and I didn't care enough to figure out something you actually need."

They're a crappy way companies try to get more money out of people. Either you don't use all of the money on the card, or card holder ends up spending additional money over the card's balance.
