Am being driven slowly mad by you guys not parsing this sentence correctly. It literally starts with the option “scanning your face”, why would you need to do anything else?

I knew not moisturising would pay off.
I'm so drop dead gorgeous I'd crash the whole app.
Face scanning is not an accurate way to accurately determine age. Someone who's under 18 can pass for an adult and vice versa. It's why in the UK the rule is that you ID someone if they look under 25, not under 18, despite the legal limit being over 18 in most cases.
If they want a scan of my ugly mug the jokes on them really
I’d prefer the payment card. Let my bank verify my age
Are people mistaking the ‘or’ for an ‘and’?
I'll use a recent picture of Keith Richards - that should suffice.
Next you'll be saying "I have nothing to hide, go ahead and scan & archive all my private communications too please. That way it's more convenient for your authoritarian tendencies."
What a genuinely ridiculous comment.
People who own an iPhone through which they browse Bluesky should be totally fine with this
There’s a difference between having your phone scan your face, the details of which never leave your phone, and your facial data going to a third party for age analysis though.
I mean, there is but I assume there’ll be safeguards in place, they aren’t going to sell it all to some Chinese app
You are kidding right?
I do not believe a company whose business model is providing 3rd party verification software to other companies that rely on them will sell pictures of my face to the Chinese, no.
But a hacker would.
And Epic have been hacked several times in the past.
no, right up until the time they do, or surrender it to the Vance World Order Examiners in 2030 ;)
No, indeed, but there’s still a big difference between a face scan with details stored locally and one that’s sent to a third party.
Agreed. So what about an app that scans your face and verifies age and the data never leaves your phone..? (I’m clearly no expert)
Yeah we absolutely don't know that that won't happen. I'm certainly not giving them my face scan. All I need is the kids menu anyway - I like the idea of being protected from the stuff I didn't even know was here until yesterday.
How do you know?
Because a business with a model that is based around security and discretion would be drummed out of business off the back of one sale?
Is Zuckerberg out of business? I seem to recall him selling data to Cambridge Analytica!
Leaving aside the fact that’s not what happened (CA harvested data from FB, different thing), and leaving aside that FB was fined 5 billion and lost 100 billion off their share price, biometric data analysis was not FB’s selling point to customers whereas in this case it would be?
You assume...
But what if you have a face that shatters glass, what then?
No, they won’t steal your ID or bank details because they’ll scan your face and you both are - and look - 47. Sorry to break it to you.
Excellent. I’m 58 so loving the prospect of looking 47 again 💪
Hey, hey, harsh. True, but harsh.
I got IDd 2 years ago when getting my kids teachers Christmas presents. It was annoying anyway as I didn't have ID but really annoying cos I was under no illusion about the fact that I looked every day of my nearly 38 years.
I'm still annoyed about it now, evidently.
I wish I didn’t look my age either tbf and mine is worse than 47, I was being nice
This is gonna be terrible for the thirty year olds that think they've held back the years with magnesium and spinach.
People who use their face to unlock their phone, then constantly post selfies of themselves and their shitty lunch and put their card details into sites to buy shit off the internet are complaining that social media is stealing their identities. Humans are fucking stupid.
I've been told for the past 60 years that I look a lot younger than I am so I'll probably have to cheat and scan my dad's face.
I'd rather give them my card details than let them know how old I look......
You can also opt out of it and still have access.
Yeah well you're using words and anyone with a working knowledge of history knows the Nazis also used words. Shame on you.
Sudo: is that the spelling in that strange alternative English spelling alphabet they taught kids in the late 60s? (Initial Teaching Alphabet)
Is the "sudo science" the science you do on Linux?
Whenever I read anyone talking about phrenology I remember that passing gag on a Discworld book, about the travelling retrophrenologist who would visit your town with a bag of mallets in different shapes and sizes.
"Measure my head bumps" "No!" "sudo measure my head bumps" "OK, sure"
Brilliant
Also I mean the nazis weren't using 'racial profiling' in concentration camps because yknow once they'd sent people there identification had been done
Su-su-su-sudooooo
I am 63 but look 21. In my dreams..
I read the comments and it gets increasingly more insane. but it did give me the opportunity to block the absolute danger (and the type of person at whom this policy is aimed) who said we should be “educating our children about porn”.
Oh, and if you have a biometric passport, the UK government already has your facial image on file.
Does everyone look 47? I'd be fine with looking 47.
I am 56 and I moisturise only rarely. Big win for me this morning.
I have never been so insulted in my life.
Hah! In your face! I only LOOK 47, actually
Um. I look extremely young and glamorous. So, this is just a lie?
Tbf you do look alarmingly young but you aren’t the median bluesky user
THANK YOU. Fucksake, was it that hard?
As an aside, discovered my boss genuinely thought I was in my mid 20s the other day, which is THRILLING and also explains why she kept asking me if there was a huge age gap between me and M. LMFAO
My aim is to age slowly enough that people start considering M to be a massive pervy sleaze
the second post in the thread contradicts the first. where the first says you lose access to bluesky, the second says you get an adult content filter. neither's a good idea, but that doesn't feel so apocalyptic
Muricans
Yeah, the problem with face scanning isn't privacy (for most people), it's that trusting it to keep kids out is comically, *painfully* naïve.
I mean tbf the average bluesky user is a 42 year old central government policy wonk so I don’t think keeping the kids out is strictly necessary and I’m not convinced of the need for the act to begin with but the chicken little stuff I also find unconvincing
Yeah, I don't think spotty 14 year olds wanting some naughty stuff head for bluesky much...
I’m quite happy they will have to work a bit harder for their smut - way too easy for them atm. Sneaking dodgy stuff to each other it right of passage stuff
Hey I'll have you know I'm older than that... and therefore above average. Right?
I get it, but I preferred it when you had to have a number and it wasn’t open to everyone. Still, they have to beat X somehow. I don’t use face ID on my phone because it irritates me.
i like how everybody in the quote tweets are convinced that their bit of the site is the foundational, cornerstone part of the site
Personally I'll probably just turn on the VPN.
But that's even worse, isn't it? What VPNs do with your data can be really dodgy, especially as a load seem to have been giving sensitive data to the Russian and Chinese governments.
Yes, quite. If you’re paying for it, then *maybe* it’s fine, but anything free is selling whatever it can.
If I scan my face and it asks for a second method because I just look too damn young. I will be flexing!
Also, the meat of the story is "verify your identity or they'll filter out certain explicit content" (not cut off access as the headline implies). Granted, there are people with legitimate concerns(TM) there, but one option is to just.. stay unverified and leave the filter on.
Verify your *age*, not identity. But yes.
Ah, hang on, this means no more jokes about the absurdly hot models on wxcharts.com, for risk my account gets flagged as smut. This is bad...
Would also stop me accidentally clicking on nsfw stuff on my work phone and having a panic attack. Bonus.
Half the people complaining have their own picture as their profile picture.
The other half spent a lot of time on here talking about what a terrible misogynistic place social media & the world generally is and how we must do something about it. Fucking infuriating.
What isn’t?
I saw that and it's not the only post that tries to frame an attempt to stop minors looking at porn or being contacted by strangers on the internet as part of a war in the middle east. It's for each individual to decide whether that's acceptable or a sick leveraging of an already horrific situation.
Well, quite! It does rather ignore the fact that the bill had a long and tortuous route through parliament that started at least 18 months before the 7th October attacks and indeed became law only 19 days later.
