On Graham Linehan: 1) it is completely unacceptable to advocate harassing and assaulting trans women. 2) unless the advocacy crosses the line from the hypothetical into realistic incitement in concrete circumstances, this should be a matter for cancellation not incarceration. 1/2
If the terms of his bail included prohibiting him from posting on X and then he posted on X, then what he posted was largely irrelevant. He knowingly breached his bail terms and was therefore liable to be arrested.
3) I haven’t formed a settled view which side of the line this is. This is generalised incitement of a not obviously physically aggressive group, but on the other hand the circumstances described occur daily. Sorry to annoy absolutely everyone on this. 2/2
You need to understand the context of Linehan’s suggestion that the public punch trans women if they use a female facilities. Yes, it’s an online comment, but the concrete circumstances are playing out on the ground right now. Making such a comment in THIS context is seriously dangerous. See here:
There are real world consequences to Linehan's actions. Women have been assaulted whilst using women's facilities and, Linehan may have caused some of those assults with his actions. It's also noted he has a court appearance on Thursday in connection with an alleged assault on a woman.
