I vividly remember the early 2010s Canadian study where if you had a "Asian" name you were substantially less likely to get a callback. Same time frame a LinkedIn boss went viral for a "Coffee cup test". Business hiring is legit biased and broken into bits at this point.
(Coffee cup test was that he would give every interviewee a coffee cup, and he would only hire people who volunteered to clean it after use. It's legit stupid and actively works AGAINST how people act with gifts and strangers.)

A government contractor I know screwed up *enormously* and made redundant an entire very necessary department. They had to rehire a bunch of people but none of them made it through the mandatory pre-mandatory-interview assessment. Took months to sort out.

This is why they need to "tear the paper ceiling". There are plenty of examples in politics, business, the not-for-profit sector, and religious groups where a degree has not meant doing a good job. And there are plenty of people who could contribute if they were not discriminated against.
To be fair, any HR software AI that looked for passion and dedication I would put money on turning out to be horribly racist and sexist.

I made vague posts on LI that almost got me fired. I was given a written "verbal" warning and told to remove my posts. They went against the company "culture." I am not and on LI for anything. I removed my current connections because one of them narc-ed on me.

I'm still laughing about the AI company who have accidentally named themselves after my old band.
I worked at a large company that "hired on passion". There were over 700 people in my division. Then they bought the company I worked for (whittled down to 35 people). Within 5 months, they let go 500 people and none of us were fired. They hated us. It's sad that there were some good people let go.

It's also (as your piece implies) a perversion of Sinek's actual point which is that top organizations THAT ARE CHOOSING BETWEEN VERY QUALIFIED CANDIDATES are better off choosing someone who is slightly worse on paper but not an asshole - which is true, but not at all a blanket attitude > skills.
Like yeah, the Navy SEALS might choose the stand-up guy with impeccable character over the asshole beside him who can do a few more pullups, but that's because they're choosing between two dudes who can both do an objectively obscene number of pullups.
Having worked with a few asshole during my carea, I totally get this.
Drives me crazy too. That is the dumbest thing I have heard again and again. All lip service. No one wants to really train from scratch. They only want to train in way the company operates and its expectations. No one (maybe a few unicorns) hire not in a rush to fill a new position or backfill one.

HUGE PROBLEM. I retired from a Fortune 100 company where I started as a secretary (no degree) and worked my way up to run an International division within. I couldn't get hired there today because of the screen.
I started reaching out to employers who use Bamboo and other AI filtering software and ask them if they want a resume and cover optimized for AI or if they prefer a heartfelt human written application. They chose human written every time. And I got the job every time I did this.
I dumped LinkedIn because it has become so trashy. The UI stinks and there are too many bots.
What is the alternative? I am reluctant user.
Let me tell you about trying to find an office chair. You can go onto any site selling chairs and filter by many metrics. Inevitably if you are setting those filters based on exactly what you walked in wanting you will be looking at zero chairs.
You can buy a chair with no arms. You can buy a chair that supports someone heavy. You can buy a chair that's very narrow. You can't buy a chair that does those three things at the same time. It's not impossible for that chair to exist, but it doesn't exist on the market.
