Traffic counts were used to rationalize the signal and we were even told it would “slow drivers down”. Ofc, that’s not true. When drivers have a green light instead of a 4-way stop, they will drive faster inherently. The dangerous crossing is just feet from the new signal.
While the crossing was dangerous before, the light makes it worse. It makes the character of street more hostile and makes drivers feel like this is a “through” street, signaling they don’t need to pay attention to people outside of cars.
What’s especially sad about this case is that NDOT is neither proactive OR reactive here. We have dozens of intersections that need more attention than this. I can understand 3rd not being addressed before Dot Dobbins’ crash. I’m more concerned that a fatality did not give NDOT pause
We can put in a flashing beacon and pat ourselves on the back, but if we’re serious about saving lives, we have to actually put safety FIRST. Here, a fellow Nashvillian was killed trying to cross the street and we actively made it less safe
If NDOT isn’t adaptable enough to say, “look, there was a fatality here. Let’s revisit our plans for this street before we building anything new,” then what even is the point of Vision Zero?
What is the alternative plan for a traffic light when an intersection has had accidents pre-installation?
There are lots of options. The bottom line is the light makes it less safe
