Something I loved about the film is just how earnest it is. The kids are all passionate dreamers who are trying to be pure artists, a far cry from the careerism that’s infected everything nowadays.

Anyway, speaking of this period, if you ever want to feel really depressed, go to the NYT archives where you can view scans of the actual paper, and look at the Arts section from a given day during this period. You will weep at we’ve lost.
