Anyway, speaking of this period, if you ever want to feel really depressed, go to the NYT archives where you can view scans of the actual paper, and look at the Arts section from a given day during this period. You will weep at we’ve lost.
Something I loved about the film is just how earnest it is. The kids are all passionate dreamers who are trying to be pure artists, a far cry from the careerism that’s infected everything nowadays.
I’m fascinated by the late ‘70s to early ‘80s period. It’s kind of a melancholy era, trapped between the hangover of Watergate and the onset of AIDS and Reaganism, and the art from that period really reflects that I think.
Watched FAME (1980) last night. I thought it was great.

I don’t really know or even care at this point what’s going on, but it was pretty routine during my politically aware life to hear a news report that said “The president is getting a colonoscopy today so Dick Cheney was briefly sworn in as president.” Impossible to imagine Trump allowing that.
I think this is actually an incredibly effective tactic, they did it to Joe Biden in 2020 to great success. It doesn’t cause people to blame Mamdani *now*, but rather to prime them to blame him after he’s elected
