SC needs to bring back Alexander LaVonte Luthor
SC needs to bring back Alexander LaVonte Luthor
honestly the most powerful face of villainous tomfoolery. I can't take nicolas hoult luthor seriously. no goofy white CEO can be taken seriously as a threat. But hell hath no fury like a bald lightskinneded man scornèd
He also dated all of Clark's women in his life at certain points. Lois prior to Clark arriving in Metropolis and Lana in her re-introductory episode. That man is a menace, but he is so natural that I understand Clark being put out by him and Bruce when Bruce dates Lois.
He has this evil charm that Batman or Bruce Wayne just couldn't in any other work. The closest I can think of is a Batman episode where Bruce's mind is corrupted by Poison Ivy and Bruce is happy to be engaged, but that was more deranged than evil.
Oh. I don't know about that... youtu.be/q3aYwfMvPUQ?...
Still the best versions of both Lex and Superman
OK but he isn’t black, his character design was based on a white actor (Telly Savalas) & his skin tone is the same as Superman’s & Lois Lane’s
Right about Kojak, WAY OFF about skin tone 🤣
Now put them side to side in the same lighting. You get Superman & Lois in daylight & Lex at night. Sneaky.
This reminds me how much I loved Wendell Pierce as Perry this time around.
I’m dying 😭😭😭😭
This is embarrassing
Let me guess, you “don’t see color”?
Hey, I wanted a black Lex in live action. I’m just saying that while I see why people think this Lex is biracial, he isn’t
So you wanted the *villain* to be Black in live action but not the heroes. Do you not get that making the villain Black but not making the heroes Black is racist? It's perpetuating the "scary Black man" trope. It's allowing Black actors to work *only* if they play the unsympathetic character.
Wanting Lex Luther to be Black is *not* "proof that I'm not racist." It's racist.
So if I don’t think he’s black in the cartoon, I’m racist, and if I wanted him to be black (played specifically by Denzel Washington) in live action, I’m racist. OK
You say this as though these two things are contradictory but they're not. Two different things can both be racist. If multiple people tell you that in a situation, you're saying racist things, when do they become credible? Everyone is racist. The key to fighting racism is accepting that.
I gave you the reason that what you said is racist. Instead of examining that, you took it personally. You can't eliminate racism in yourself if you get upset when someone says you did something racist. As a white person, I will inevitably do something racist. That's why I listen.
As a non-white person, I’m not taking instruction on anti-racism from a white person
You’re actually the first person saying that any of this is racist
For the record I’d also be down with a black Superman. Calvin Ellis, Clark Kent, Val-Zod, either way doesn’t matter. Diversity is good.
Not with that attitude he isn’t. I’ve never seen the series, does he specifically say he is white or black in it? Or have any of the creators?
The creators very explicitly said his appearance is based on a white actor. I think that’s as definitive as anyone involved has been. He never said he was white in any of the DCAU shows as far as I know.
I don’t want to wake up to Louvre so while it’s still all fun & games I should mention that there’s a decades running joke among Black people where we ‘adopt’ characters that code like us as Black since historically our media representation has left much to be desired. That’s what we’re doing here.
I'm curious if it was the same for telly savalas/Kojak
So you adopt the evil green slug demon?
Times were hard!!
it had never even occured to me that this would be in question by anyone
Like I said, I can see why people think he is, but that doesn’t mean he is. Y’all seeing it like claiming Picolo or something, I see it like claiming George W Bush
Think he was supposed to Greek or something but I could be misremembering.
No, I remember that, too. Some greek influence in his design.
I can't recall where I heard that but it was a long time ago. But I'm pretty sure it was a behind the scenes thing when they were talking about the character.
As a white person, I’m gonna sit this one out and say I fully support Lupita’s reasoning.
PICCOLO IS GREEN DON'T YOU SEE THAT
Okay he's the best tho. Just like John Stewart is the best Green Lantern.
Also might be telling on my very pasty self but when someone was like "Piccolo from DBZ is black right?" I was like yes 100% I understand this.
I'm pretty sure the entire DBZ fanbase has accepted Piccolo into the black community.
Please tell that to people who get upset when you say that.
I've never seen anyone get upset about it, but I'm not surprised they exist.
Yeah I remember watching Chris Reeves Superman and was very confused half way through.
Best Lex Luthor by far. Second best is the crazy white one stealing cakes. This Lex is a 12th-level intellect who's gonna conquer the Source Wall
This is a fact.
The other thing about this Lex is that he is built and is a visual size match for Superman. Made him more imposing as a villain. All the live action movies*/TV shows make him a purely intellectual threat (*haven't seen the new one).
I ran a comic book shop for a few years. And you don't know how many people that came up to me believing that Lex Luthor was always black. Much like with Green Lantern at the time as soon as they saw the white version everybody questioned why is he white now?
Sir Patrick Stewart was so perfectly Professor X that it fucked me up when I went to the comics and found out he was a Vietnam vet and not English.
I always say, movies have a way of making things real. Even when we reach the source material, it still reads as a negative.
I always say it's weird for Americans to run boarding schools.
Catwoman too. Every time she’s white it seems wrong to me.
I think the funniest thing about Catwoman is she's been black almost as often as she's been White. So it works either way and people complaining are yelling at the clouds.
You’re right on that one.
Oh same
Yeah I grew up with black green lantern. That dude was a stoic badass, which is why every other rendition of GL felt wrong
My favorite episode of Justice League is the one where Lex and the Flash switch bodies, and all of the humor in that episode is Lex trying to cope with the situation.
nobody knew to get mad, he's The Rock coded
I'm glad i wasn't the only one to think this. I had seen the Reeves films and old cartoons first, but when S:TAS came I just accepted this was him, now.
He's now also more explicitly black in the new Harley Quinn animated series too (his voice actors are black VAs too in it).
Racism in America is so fucking weird. I could see white supremacists being okay with the bad guy being Black, mad that the guy with their values being Black, or simply pissed that they see Black. They make so little sense it's impossible to guess lol
best Lex Luthor, definitely my favorite Clancy Brown role youtu.be/Kh1CqCAc2fE?...
Clancy Brown is so good here that he's not playing Lex Luthor. He's playing the Flash pretending to be Lex Luthor using Flash's speaking style with his Luthor voice.
TBF this was Wally West in Luthor’s body
this show has so many funny luthor moments. he's so arrogant but also constantly salty and you can kind of tell why, b/c for all his power and wealth nobody seems to respect him until they're forced to. he has to dominate everyone into groveling
God i forgot how fucking funny that Sinestro line was
Best Luthor yes, But Mr Krabs is king shit
Okay, but using THAT clip is cheating, and we both know why. 😉
I have no idea who that is.
clancy brown demolished this role. perfect every time he is on screen
😂
Plus he looks like a badass.
