These concepts are only good if there is an infinite amount of good/useful land to be had, which obviously there is not. We can make a basically unlimited supply of new humans that need land to survive on, but haven’t come up with systems that allow for the sharing of resources we derive from land.
Zoning laws lay bare the inherent contradictions in our ideals of “freedom” (laissez-faire, invisible hand, free markets, yadda yadda) and the reality that we *do* recognize (and codify) the need to allocate certain land for certain purposes.
Zoning commissions and govts can’t make perfect decisions because everyone operates on imperfect information.
