the colbert discourse is stupid and cringe but it is resolutely true that anyone who lives by the image dies by the image and we are squarely in a society that has chosen the image as their primary mode of governance. sending in the clowns is a rational response against the circus.
Colbert could be the 1 person capable of pointing out how comically absurd it is that there exists a "most important position in the world".

Yeah for me a perfectly ripe "good" mango is almost impossible to beat among all the fruits in the world. Purple mangosteen comes close and imo has a better flavor but mango texture and ability to shove your face into it is unparalleled. Also incredibly tasty scent.
The mangos they sell in the USA are mostly a totally different breed from the good ones in Asia. I don't know why they can't grow the good ones in Mexico but they don't for whatever reason. So brendel is both right and wrong

Zoning commissions and govts can’t make perfect decisions because everyone operates on imperfect information.
Zoning laws lay bare the inherent contradictions in our ideals of “freedom” (laissez-faire, invisible hand, free markets, yadda yadda) and the reality that we *do* recognize (and codify) the need to allocate certain land for certain purposes.
These concepts are only good if there is an infinite amount of good/useful land to be had, which obviously there is not. We can make a basically unlimited supply of new humans that need land to survive on, but haven’t come up with systems that allow for the sharing of resources we derive from land.
OK now follow me down this rabbit hole. Our property laws are based on English laws which are based on Roman laws. We are dealing with the consequences of 2000+ year old concepts of heritable land/property titles creating a class of major and minor nobles.
this is a good lesson in why complex problems can never be solved by tweaking just one thing. big problems are always caused by multiple other problems, there are no easy solutions where you can change 1 thing to solve it, you need to change lots of things

This thread reminds me of many of my blog posts. Looking at things from different perspectives is so key to understanding the world.
It means life experience and expertise, practice framing problems or thinking in a certain way, practice thinking critically, practice approaching the unidentifiable with curiosity rather than fear, with understanding rather than attack, are critical. What we believe, collectively, becomes true.
