Because it's something that you would need to put in a manifesto and take to an election to logically make happen without being written off as going against people's wishes. Anyone suggesting it's a simple and easy process that could just be done is gaslighting people as much as the brexiters did

Why? Seriously, why? They have a massive majority. They could say "Brexit was far more damaging than we thought. Now that we are in power and have finally had a chance to dig through all the facts, it's clear that small fixes will never work". Then take big bold steps back towards EU alignment.

They do and they got that majority based on a very straightforward position at the election - anything other than better alignment was off the table for this parliament. They are doing exactly what they said they would and people are annoyed by that. There is a huge amount to do everywhere else

Do you see them winning in 2029 on their current course? I estimate their chances at zero percent. Given that, it's worth at least considering doing something else. Governments don't have to stick slavishly to their manifesto. Not with a giant majority.

I expect 2 years of structural reform which they are getting on with, 2 years when stuff starts to impact & get delivered into an election - having no idea what the political landscape will be in 29 I'm not putting bets on - but right now it's only a very small minority pinning everything on joining

Reform's massive poll lead won't get turned around in a hurry. Steering the mood of a disinterested and disillusioned Britain is like trying to steer a supertanker: the turning circle required is MASSIVE. Two years from now is too late. It may already be too late.

and moving to join etc. at this point will deliver nothing before 2029 - it delivers nothing tangible or useful but will clog parliament and the news cycle for months on end - feeding loads of air time to the RW's to blame the EU for everything. Enjoy the rest of Sunday

That would be 1000x better than keeping the argument on immigration, Farage's home turf. Force Farage to defend Brexit against the reality of Brexit.

He simply can - we didn't do it properly/hard enough/oh look some migrants - when the majority of the print media backed and still backs brexit it doesn't work. The way out is through delivery - part of that is actually getting the asylum system under some sort of control

We will never agree. You will have all too long to rue your optimism come 2029.

That's for the period now through 2029. It would let them go into the 2029 GE with a credible "Negotiate to rejoin the EU" manifesto having already laid all the groundwork they possibly could so that it's a believable stance.
