rom 1795 through 1956, US currency had the national motto, "E Pluribus Unum,” which means, “From Many, One.” In 1956, it was changed to, “In God We Trust,” for the Cold War to somehow magically defeat godless Communism. We need to lose some god and gain some pride again.

Who needs pride when you can blindly believe everything some self-identified interpreter of God tells you?

We need to embrace the multiculturalism that built a strong nation after World War Two. The USA has always been a nation of land stealing immigrants, but turning that diversity into a team is what put the USA in its role as a world power.

We need to revamp our currency. I don't know if you've seen Euro or the Brazilin Reals but it's beautiful and colorful. Also different sizes so you know what bill you're holding. Here in the 1st World Country, Greatest Place on Earth same old green shit we've had forever.

Great motto. Why did you ever change that? USA is not a Christian nation. You indeed have too many zealots and gun-loving lunatics.

That's also when "under god" was added to the pledge of Allegiance. I was so pissed when I found out I had had to say "under god" every morning in the pledge because of some paranoid, controlling idiot from the 1950s.

My parents never said it after they did that. I regularly did not recite it in school in the 60s/70s for this reason.

Also: the Pledge sounds so much more badass without it. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands! One nation, INDIVISIBLE, with Liberty AND Justice FOR ALL! Take that you Confederate assholes!

And knowing this, it has never ceased to amaze and amuse me how often MAGA knuckle-draggers will point to our currency as an example of how this ours is a "Christian" nation (even leaving out for now their notion that the only real god is the "Christian" god) See also: "Pledge of Allegiance"...

Who else remembers the magical cure for stagflation put forth by the president who pardoned Nixon ? Buttons with W.I.N printed on them. "Whip. Inflation. Now" How can we possibly compete With such economic genius? When it fits on a bumper sticker.

I would prefer not use the Iato Cnstitute as a source, but this is ironic. The Cold War added “under God” later. “It was written by Francis Bellamy, a Christian Socialist pushed out of his post as a Baptist minister for delivering pulpit-pounding sermons on such topics as “Jesus the Socialist.”

You are right, just checked on some of my old bills from the last century. Shame. Especially when the founding fathers wanted to have nothing to do with religion. Any religion. But then, they did not want an insurrectionist as President.

Was the national motto changed to fight the Cold War or was it changed more as a response to segregation being struck down and certain people and states needing to assert a Christian tone and dominance?

Never should have changed. Also, I’m for removing god and religion from any and all aspects of what should be our secular life, i.e. public and government. That’s what churches are for, talking to the imaginary friend and quiet reflection (emphasis on quiet).
