Normally at this time of year we see lots of migrant farm workers passing through for harvest season (you'll see them at the Walmart help desk sending money home to their families, which always makes me admire the hell out of them. Total respect). This year I haven't seen any.

In high school I tried to pick beans in the fields in Oregon. Nothing but total respect for the Latino people that worked so much harder than I was able to.
I did corn detassling. Worst job ever!!! Who knew corn leaves are sharp like razor blades?

Yep, that's why you wear long sleeves and pants during harvest season, even in scorching heat. But by far the worst job I know of is when one summer my cousin was sent to pick up tea rose petals (we make jam out of them). The bushes are thorny, so he basically worked around 100 sharp blades all day.

I'm telling you it is hard hard work,and most people here aren't going to do that type of work, especially for the pay, and no insurance coverage. If the home builders were to pay a living wage to their employees and offered insurance coverage then Americans might be persuaded to do manual labor.

We live about 50 miles from town. Every skilled labor job we have done costs a fortune. Fix the hose hydrant $1200. Get the septic pumped $800. Fix a pipe leak $1400. Get a new furnace $5k. I would be lucky to get my roof done for what my neighbors probably paid.
