Unless he was aiming center mass and didn't account for the bullet's trajectory. A .308 at that range would be arcing upwards most likely and so if he shot middle of chest he got lucky and hit the neck.

Like I said in the next reply, anybody with the sense to aim center mass would have the sense to take that into account, because headshots are needlessly flash. But I suspect if he knew to aim center mass he'd have taken that into account. But either way, not a pro and not a trick shot.
Do we know what caliber rifle he used?
They said it was an imported Mauser .30-06 bolt action rifle. I still think that was a headshot that dropped.
I agree with this assessment.
.30-06
You are correct then. Headshot that dropped.
.30-06 "older Mauser" whether that means a milsurp or a hunting rifle with a Mauser action is not clear.
Either way, with a 30.06 that's dropping, so yeah, I think @matthewbest.bsky.social is correct. Homeboy tried for a headshot and got lucky.
Another thing to consider is that he was shooting down from a pretty tall roof and basically everyone practices flat. Could easily have thrown off his elevation.
I mean yeah also a fair point, but that's an equally not-a-pro move.
